Norfolk Jail Ministry
The Norfolk Jail Ministry was organized in 1995 by the jail chaplain and church representatives to provide ministry programs and religious services to the inmates housed there. FPC is one of many
Norfolk churches that sends volunteers, funds, and materials to support this ministry.
With an average of 1,750 inmates at any one time, there is a tremendous need for Christ’s Good News in the jail. Incarceration is often a wake-up call to the individual who has taken a wrong path and needs to know Christ’s love and forgiveness. It also affords time the inmate can use to reflect and re-turn to a right path. The kindness of a volunteer, the scripture that speaks to them, or the group meeting that touches their heart may provide a critical turning point in their lives.
Volunteers work with individuals or small groups to conduct Bible study, one-on-one spiritual counseling and to distribute Bibles and Christian literature. Those who feel called to this ministry are encouraged to contact Rev. Dr. Kirk Houston at 664-4954. To volunteer you must be active in your church, have your pastor’s endorsement, and be available to serve on a weekly basis.
